The Tofurkey Trap: Why DIY Estate Planning Won’t Cut It

sarabarnett2

My family, like many others, has its fair share of dietary preferences, including several vegans—my mom among them. At Thanksgiving and Christmas we usually have both vegan and non-vegan options.  To my surprise, at our annual Barnett Family Thanksgiving a few weeks ago, we traded our traditional turkey for Tofurkey only. Our Christmas dinner will also be completely vegan. Now, don’t get me wrong, I actually like Tofurkey. If I were vegan, I’d probably love it.  You can make quite a feast with Tofurkey and roasted veggies and some gravy (email me for recipes).  But the truth is, it’s just not the same as the real thing. It is great if you need a substitute, but if you want the real deal, then you need some turkey.

That made me think about substitutes in other areas of life—like estate planning. Online services like LegalZoom or FreeWills.com might seem like a convenient and cost-effective substitute, but when it comes to something as important as your family’s future, they’re no replacement for working with a professional. Here’s why your estate plan deserves the full-course treatment.

1. One-Size-Fits-All is Like Serving Microwaved Mashed Potatoes

Estate planning is personal, just like every family’s holiday dinner is unique. Online templates take a one-size-fits-all approach, leaving out the nuances that make your situation special. Whether it’s blended families, special needs dependents, or tax considerations, these services can’t provide the customization you need.

An estate planning attorney takes the time to understand your goals and family dynamics, crafting a plan as tailored as Grandma’s secret stuffing recipe.

2. Mistakes Can Lead to Legal Food Poisoning

DIY estate planning services often miss critical details. Even a small error—like forgetting a signature or misunderstanding state laws—can render your plan ineffective. The consequences? Legal disputes that feel like an undercooked turkey ruining the whole meal.

An experienced attorney ensures your documents are legally sound and complete, giving you and your family the peace of mind you deserve.

3. Limited Scope is Like Forgetting Dessert

Estate planning isn’t just about drafting a will. It’s about creating a full-course feast that includes:

  • Durable power of attorney

  • Healthcare directives

  • Trusts to avoid probate or reduce taxes

  • Asset protection strategies

Online platforms may offer the bare minimum, leaving critical pieces out of your estate plan—like skipping dessert at Christmas dinner. An attorney makes sure nothing is overlooked.

4. No Personalized Touch, Like Store-Bought Cranberry Sauce

Estate planning attorneys do more than draft documents. They’re your sous chef for life’s big changes, helping with:

  • Planning for incapacity

  • Protecting minor children or special needs beneficiaries

  • Reducing taxes on your estate

Online services can’t offer the depth of expertise or personal touch that an attorney provides. It’s like comparing homemade cranberry sauce to the canned stuff—there’s just no contest.

5. Outdated Documents are Like Leftovers Gone Bad

Life changes—marriage, divorce, kids, financial shifts—mean your estate plan needs updating. DIY services rarely include ongoing reviews, leaving you with documents as stale as week-old fruitcake.

An estate planning attorney builds a relationship with you, ensuring your plan evolves with your life.

6. Hidden Costs are the Holiday Bill Nobody Wants

While online services might seem cheaper upfront, mistakes can lead to:

  • Lengthy probate proceedings

  • Expensive legal battles

  • Increased tax liabilities

Investing in professional estate planning now is like buying quality ingredients for your Thanksgiving dinner—it’s worth it to avoid a holiday disaster.

Trust the Real Deal for Your Estate Planning Needs

Your estate plan is too important to leave to chance. Just like there’s no true replacement for turkey at Thanksgiving, there’s no substitute for the expertise of a professional estate planning attorney. Skip the Tofurkey and give your family the gift of a well-crafted, legally sound estate plan—because peace of mind is the best holiday tradition of all….even better than turkey.
